Preparing Your Furniture for Moving House
- Make sure to clean your furniture before packing.
It doesn't make sense to pack dirty ones because it will just make things
harder for you when you're unpacking in your new home. You want to have a
fresh new start, don't you?
- If it's possible to disassemble the furniture, do
so. Many furnishings such as tables and shelves are made to be dismantled
so that you can use a regular-shaped box when packing them.
- Keep screws, legs and other components close to
the furniture they're supposed to be. You can place them in clear plastic
bags to quickly identify them when you're unpacking. You should also put
appropriate labels on their bags such as "legs of nursery
tables" or "screws for bookshelf". Then you can tape these bags unto the furniture for easy assembly in your new home.
- Remove contents of shelves and drawers. This will
make the furnishings lighter and safer to move or
lift. If possible, take out the drawers and pack them separately. If you
want to retain the contents, simply pack them together with the drawer
they're supposed to be in.
- Use blankets and towels for packing fragile items
such as glass surfaces of coffee tables. You can always use thick packing
paper or bubble wraps, but if you find these special packing supplies too
expensive, you can use linens instead. Other possible pads for securing
furniture and contents in boxes include stuffed toys and pillows.
Do these tips and you'll
find your moving day to go smoothly without hassle.
